Our Mission

We give scientists a microphone.

Scientists turned Stand-Up Comics!

Comedian performing on stage with microphone.
Speaker on stage addressing large audience.

Our science communication workshops teach scientists the basics of comedy writing and performance. In just a few short weeks they produce what amounts to hilarious TedTalk-like sets to a live audience.

Through our workshops, we help each scientist to craft a 5-10 minute talk about a scientific topic with only three rules: 1) they have to teach something, 2) they have to be funny, and 3) their only tool is a microphone.

We make difficult topics accessible, and humanize scientists without undermining the seriousness of their professions. These shows are educational, but definitely for adults.

What sets us apart?

We’re the only organization turning REAL scientists into comics.

Join us for a brainy comedy night where local scientists make you learn AND laugh!

Nothing makes science accessible and relatable like humor.  Science Riot is the only science outreach program in the country to turn scientists into comics through immersive training in comedy writing and performance. The resulting showcase is an evening of laughter, learning, and libations where our newest cohort deliver their 10-minute comedy talks directly to real life humans.

Our events draw sold-out audiences of diverse demographics from outside of the science bubble; especially when compared to other science outreach events geared towards other STEM professionals.

Our show attendees have a great time, but even better our performers say their experience improves their science communication skills well beyond the stage. From presentations to grant writing, they are better equip to engage people with their work.

By the way, we use the term “scientist” in the broadest possible sense; we welcome all science-related fields and STEM-adjacent professions (and even some humanities).

Real Experts. Real Funny.
